How to Make a Little Dolls House for Your Kids

Little girls do love their dolls. The dolls themselves can be quite expensive to begin with and then come the clothes and accessories. Ask any little girl what they would like in their bedroom and the answer will undoubtedly be a dolls house.

But, my word, they can be expensive. They often run into hundreds of pounds for a basic model and can reach thousands of pounds. This puts them out of reach for many people, and it does seem a little unfair. There is an alternative, however. it’s not perfect, but it will keep you and your little girl occupied for many hours. Build your own. It’s not as crazy as it sounds, and you can work together creating a masterpiece that just keeps improving over time.

Here’s how to make your own dolls house from everyday materials.

For this project you are going to need:

  • Cardboard (mixture of thicknesses and sizes + corrugated)
  • Scissors
  • Craft Knife
  • Glue gun
  • Paint
  • Felt pens
  • Base board (3mm hardboard sheet, available from DIY shops

1/ Begin by cutting out the side and back walls of the house from corrugated cardboard. Keep the corrugations running vertical. Use a hot glue gun, such as those available from Glue Guns Direct and other high quality retailers to ‘weld’ them together by holding them in place and running a bead of glue along the inside corners.

2/ Cut cardboard for the internal walls on the ground floor. Remember to leave tabs on each side of these, that can be folded over and used to glue them in place. Cut out doorways before gluing the walls in. Keep the downstairs rooms fairly small, so there are more walls supporting the upstairs.

3/ Glue the downstairs walls in place.

4/ Cut the upstairs floor out of corrugated card and glue it in place by ‘welding’ to the outside walls and gluing to the tabs of the downstairs walls.

5/ The internal walls for the upstairs can be created and fitted in the same way. They will hold up the loft floor.

6/ Use strong, corrugated card for the roof. Two layers may be needed if the roof begins to sag.

7/ Cut holes in the outside walls for windows. The window frames themselves are cut from better quality card and applied to the outside of the holes later.

8/ Using lining paper and wallpaper adhesive, cover the outside of the house. This will add strength and give a good base to paint.

9/ Cut a piece of corrugated card for the front of the house. It is a good idea to make it double thickness with the corrugations at 90 degrees to each other in the layers. Apply lining paper. The front of the house will be removable for play and simply stands in place when the house is not busy.

10/ Apply the window frames that you made earlier. Also apply a few hundred individual roof tiles cut from card. It doesn’t take as long as you think once you get going.

That is the main structure complete. Now, armed with paintbrushes, your little ones can set to work decorating. If you are able to line the internal walls with paper, it will make this job easier. Dolls house wallpaper is available online at a reasonable price per sheet and does look good when applied, as the pattern is to scale.

Why stop there? Armed with cardboard, paper, and pva glue, there is a world of furniture waiting to be made.

If a mom or dad is ever looking for a way to interact with, and occupy their child, the dolls house is the answer. It is great fun and, when the kids are all grown up; they will always look back fondly at the time when you built a house together. They will probably do the same for their own children. No, wait, that’s your job Granny, you’re the expert, get to work!

Destination Dallas: What You Need to Know for a Smooth Move

dallas

“Everything’s bigger in Texas” and other slogans fill the ears of those interested in Dallas’ capital city.  Dallas allures many potential residents due to its restaurants, weather, and amicable atmosphere and peoples.

Before moving to Dallas, tenants do a number of things to ensure a smooth transition from one locale to another.  Consider the following moving tips to free the enterprise of hassle and extra money spent.

Weather

The weather in Dallas is ‘subtropical,’ making it warm and humid all year.  The humidity can take some getting used to yet rids one’s wardrobe of winter coats and other heavy articles.

In addition to modifying wardrobe, homeowners may consider seeking an address with a pool in the backyard, being the humidity, especially in the summer months, can be brutally uncomfortable.

Social Life

Downtown Dallas is burgeoning with music, culture and nightlife.  Trendy areas, mixtures of commercial and residential tenants, are building in popularity as suburban outskirts offer an alternative to those who opt to keep the core of the population and excitement at a distance.

Dallas is a city hosting a low cost of living as compared to the rest of the nation, yet a high number of Fortune 500 companies seek address there, making finding a job a bit easier as compared to other American cities.

Public Transportation

With a thriving population and business district, Dallas public transportation is well orchestrated and available in a variety of methods including buses, trains, cabs, bicycles, as well as car and bike share programs.

Travel or Real Estate Agent

There is a variety of information to peruse on the Web, yet it’s best to take a trip to the city to ‘get a feel’ for the neighborhoods and the atmosphere.  Alternatively, speak to a real estate agent presently living in the city; such personas can inform you about prices of homes, average ages of residents, school systems, etc.

A physical visit is optimal but not always economically practical.  Therefore, do the next best thing by contacting professional Dallas realtors.

Relocation Services

In addition to online information, contacting relocation services can inform residents about the needs of traveling from one specific location in America, Canada or elsewhere, and eventually landing in Dallas.

Residency

New residents usually have a specific time window to get a new driver’s license, but check with local authorities about exact timeframes as well as other requirements to officially become a resident of the city.

Aside from avoiding costly traffic tickets, establishing official residency can influence other associations such as car insurance rates.  Depending on one’s prior location, moving to Dallas, Texas warrants lower car insurance rates.

Moving is an exciting time.  Aside from explaining the move to the kids, ensuring your old home is sold, and transitioning jobs, you’ll need to ensure the city is accommodating to the needs of family and yourself.  Dallas is well known for its food, warmth, hospitality and diversity of peoples.  Its popularity is growing, prompting more people to make the move.  Before doing so, ensure you’ve considered the above facts and suggestions.

Where to head for a stylish bargain?

I don’t believe that you have to sacrifice on quality when buying things for yourself, your kids and home. “You get what you pay for” isn’t relevant any more – there are plenty of outlets offering different prices for the same product.

The best price/quality store for all my buys is definitely Argos. The choice at Argos is great – the range of products are tempting, starting from high quality home and garden furniture and ending with electronics and bicycles.

You can buy Habitat (known for its quality and design) furniture & homewares at Argos at WOW deals

I recently discovered My Voucher Codes  (Britains biggest voucher site), that has many discounts at many stores, Argos included. The next time I need something for home, I will definitely check the page out for a bargain: http://www.myvouchercodes.co.uk/argos-vouchers.

(The offers change every two days, so it’s worth to have a quick look time after time.)

My current favourite My Voucher Code offer is outdoor toys for kids. I mean, look at them! And they are 50% off.

In fact, I think Argos is the go-to place for all kids toys. Fancy a half price character costume?  Check!  Fancy a half price flying fairy?  Check!  What about half price nursery furniture – Oh, yes! Argos have it all!

Nothing keeps kids more engaged like a good old outdoor fun. Do you remember how fascinating it was to play with mud and build castles from water and sand as a kid?

Spring is on its way and kids don’t care about the British weather, let them play.

Versatile Virginia Beach: Tips for Newbies to the Water-Centric Life Style

virginia beach

So, you want to move to Virginia Beach? Why not? It’s one of the most popular vacation spots in the U.S. But, you want to live there – will you be inundated with vacationers? Possibly, but there are so many great things about the area that that aspect of it will probably not be such a big deal. Besides, people usually only stay for a few weeks during the summer. The rest of the year is yours. Here’s how to enjoy it.

Make a Moving List

If you’re using someone like Exit Realty Hampton Roads, you don’t have to worry about finding a home on your own. You just have to prepare your moving list and possibly hire professional movers. Professional real estate companies in this area are used to relocaters.

Start yoru moving list by making a room-by-room list of all of the things you need to move. Next, take a room inventory. Go to each room and write down everything in it. If this sounds too difficult, you can make it easier on yourself by cataloging the major items, and grouping similar items together.

For example, if you have a closet full of clothes, you don’t necessarily need to write down each item. You can pack everything in a box and label it “clothes.”

Delegate certain tasks. If you’re moving with a big family, agree with them on which tasks everyone will be responsible for.

Set a date for the move and track your progress. This will keep you from wasting time and possibly overpaying on your current place or your new home (carrying two mortgages or a rental agreement and a mortgage.

Get The Kids Ready

Children can be traumatized by moving. Make it easy on them. One thing kids tend to respond well to are stories. Kids stories and books that deal with change and moving are ideal. For example, “The Berenstain Bears’ Moving Day” is a great book for introducing the idea that moving can be fun and exciting.

What’s Life Like In VA Beach?

There’s a rich history in VA Beach, with all branches of the U.S. military being located here. It’s also home to the Navy’s Atlantic fleet. Combined military and civilian payroll totals more than $1.8 billion annually. Aside from that, there’s an incredible lifestyle here that awaits you.

Obviously, there’s the beach(es). You can spend an almost unlimited number of hours walking up and down the coast. But, Virginia Beach is also getting a reputation for its skilled, educated, workforce, its low tax rates, its dynamic and diverse economy and some of America’s largest companies like Amerigroup, and Lifenet.

The proximity to the Pentagon makes it an excellent place to live if you’re going to be working for a company associated with the Department of Defense or Homeland Security. Finally, there’s the simple fact that this area of the country gets a lot of sun without sacrificing the beauty of all of the seasons – something almost everyone enjoys.
