City Limits Diner

All native New Yorkers know that the allure of a Diner is the “Greasy Spoon” quality it offesr its patrons.  You know, the server is a middle-aged woman that calls you “hun” and brings you a hamburger so large you have to use utensils.  Only, you don’t want to be “that” person… the one that eats their burger with a knife and fork.  So, you pick up the whopping mass of medium (because no matter how you order it, the meat always comes out medium) ground beef wedged between two pieces of flimsy, store bought rolls and try to bring the massive mess to your mouth.  The grease and ketchup drip off the sides of the bun and down your chin each time you pick it up, oozing onto the partially soggy fries.

Anyway, for the most part, those are my experiences growing up eating at Tri-state area Diners, and it is an experience that is near and dear to my heart.  I love ordering two eggs over easy with hash browns and rye toast from a diner.  It is hangover heaven.
The City Limits Diner in White Plains, New York is the antithesis of the greasy spoon experience.  Decorated like a hopping 1950’s style soda shop, this elegant eating establishment brings four star food quality to the “Diner” experience.
I first discovered City Limits more than ten years ago (the first time in my career that I worked in White Plains).  Since then, I make it a point to go back from time-to-time.  Last week, I met my former colleague and friend Emily at City Limits for dinner.  Emily and I had not seen one another in about two years.  She just finished her first day back at work after maternity leave.  I looked forward to our catching up.

I debated my dinner decisions.  I finally decided upon the Sea Bass special.  I received a flaky wedge of sea bass with crispy skin.  They served it on a bed of spinach mashed potatoes with a side of green beans.

Emily, opted to order a burger.  Not the whooping grease receptacle I described above, rather, she ordered a turkey burger.  What do you know, they made it with real turkey.  The fries came out crispy and the bun covered the entire piece of meat.  It was a quality turkey burger, and my friend enjoyed it.

After dinner, we ordered cappuccinos and talked for a little bit longer, before I braved my commute and my friend went home to her husband and baby.

Yes, I am fond of City Limits too. Also sometimes stop there for fancy pies when going to someone's house for dinner - or when my husband is craving one of those banana creme pies for his "birthday cake"!

Their desserts are outstanding!  I bet Vince calls for "Birthday Cake" more than once a year from there
