Corn: A Variation on a Theme

After my initial outrage at the completely irresponsible commercials that the Corn Refiner’s Industry (aka large private conglomerates such as Cargil and ADM) released (see my last blog), I decided to do a little more research… research that led me to read The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan.

The first half of this book follows Grade 2 corn (hybrid sterile seeds, GMOs, etc) from its fields of growth in Iowa, through a processing plant to a feed lot – where hundreds of thousands of cattle are force-fed corn (their natural diet is grass – their digestive systems cannot process corn, so it can kill them — and would too if it were not for the insane amounts of growth hormones and antibiotics pumped into them).  The book also follows corn into processing plants that produce high fructose corn syrup, corn oil, ethanol, dextrose, maltose, and many, many other preservatives that make their way into our food.

There are many more issues with our food chain that the book addresses, however, I am not finished reading it yet, so, more to come… Needless to say, I am deeply disturbed and further troubled by these advertisements.

I know that many of you enjoy reading about my home cooking creations.   Unfortunately, I haven’t been cooking much these past few weeks.  My diet has consisted of salads, fresh fruit,  organic dairy, whole grain breads and some seafood (on occasion).  Part of my reason for the absence of fun food – be it at home or in restaurants – is also due to a surprise house-guest that took up residence in my home for about four weeks.

Now that my house-guest has departed, my work activity is settling down some, and the fall is setting in, I should be cooking and blogging with more frequency
